The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in India is highly heterogeneous. There are over 26 million enterprises of which only over 1.5 million enterprises are registered. The sector, therefore, suffers from acute data shortages. In the absence of data and research, the demands of the different constituents produce an incoherent and discordant noise making it extremely difficult for policy makers as well as development agencies to pick the right signals for right policy responses.
After the US financial crisis in 2008, when markets even in India went into a turmoil, the idea of an ‘India MSME Summit’ was conceived by FISME. The India MSME Summits are a platform where top policy makers are engaged in informed debate centered around important MSME issues in the presence of stake holders comprising MSMEs, associations, policy makers and development agencies.
Since the organization of the first India MSME Summit in 2009, FISME has been regularly organizing the Summits with top media houses. The Summits have become the mega events of the MSME sector and are thronged by stakeholders in large numbers.
