After opening up of Indian economy, close to the heels of establishment of WTO, eight state-level SME associations with NAYE gave birth to FISME in 1995 to gear up the Indian SMEs at the national level to the challenges thrown open by changed economic realities. Today as umbrella organization of SMEs, FISME has associated associations in all the progressive states of the country.
 
FISME realizes that no industry can survive today without having international vision. It understands that the important tools of marketing for SMEs in the millennium are : use of e-commerce and participation in trade fairs and trade delegations.
 
It visualizes that biggest challenge for SMEs is and will be their understanding of WTO and its implications. FISME’s activities revolve chiefly around these key areas.It organizes India’s only Trade fair for SMEs -INDTECH, mounts trade delegations to several countries, provides interface of SMEs to visiting Foreign Trade Delegations and assists and guides SMEs on using e-commerce.
 
It has presence in 20 countries through partner SME associations. It is in continuous touch with International Trade Promotion Organizations and major UN Agencies.FISME is a network that reaches to more than 1,00,000 SMEs through state level SME associations and sectoral associations.
It publishes reports and studies covering the focussed areas and targeted group.It publishes reports and studies covering the focused areas and targeted group.

FISME is a network that reaches to more than 1,00,000 SMEs through state level SME associations and sectoral associations.The membership of FISME is composed of regional associations and sectoral associations of small and medium enterprises. Industries representing all major sectors are also invited to take direct membership. The sectors covered through the network include :
