Seminar on Opportunities for MSMEs in Defence Sector on 11th June 2015


FISME organized the Seminar to initiate  a forum for discussions  on the scope, prospects as well as road blocks in participation of MSMEs in defence procurement. Inaugurating the workshop, Defence Minister of Government of India,  Sh. Manohar Parikkar, mentioned that MSMEs  with great innovative capabilities and clusters of excellence can surely be a major player in the defence  value chains. Regarding the procedural and information barriers, he mentioned that crucial requirement is of a change in mindset.


The Chief Guest at the seminar,  Dr. V K Saraswat, member NITI Aayog and ex. Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, mentioned about his own experience of  sourcing  critical defence equipments from  the MSME sector. Earlier in his welcome speech Dr. Sangam Kurade, President FISME, mentioned about the enormous capabilities of the MSME sector and competence of a large number of technology oriented entrepreneurs to invest time and money to work as tier -1 or tier – 2 supplier. “The real challenge for the MSMEs is to reach the appropriate agency who can guide them to penetrate the defence procurement system and here personal intervention of the Hon’ble Minister is needed”, mentioned Dr. Kurade


In the two technical sessions held subsequently, eminent speakers made presentations  on  defence procurement policies, and scope as well as   challenges in defence supplies  for the MSME sector. There are dots of excellence in MSME sector, the need is to connect them to develop an integrated system of defence  supplies, mentioned Air Marshal Gokhale, Chairman  of one session. Chairing the other technical session, Air Marshal Tyagi, an eminent expert on defence platforms, looked forward for a vibrant MSME supply system to the Defence OEMs.


Summing up the discussions and looking to way forward, Sh. Anil Bhardwaj, Secretary General  FISME, mentioned that the Defence Ministry will be requested to open a facilitation window  for the MSME suppliers which   they can approach to get their problems resolved.
